Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, selectively reduces fat deposits using controlled cooling. The process works as follows:

1. Cooling applicators are placed on the treatment area. The applicator uses vacuum suction to draw the tissue between two cooling panels.
2. The panels cool the skin and underlying fat to a temperature between 5°F and -11°F. This causes ice crystals to form within the fat cells.
3. The cold temperatures damage the fat cells without harming surrounding skin, nerves, vessels, or muscles. Fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than other tissues.
4. In the weeks following treatment, the crystallized fat cells break down and are gradually eliminated by the body's immune system. Fat volume in the treated area decreases by an average of 20-25%.

The selective cooling takes advantage of the higher freezing temperature of lipids compared to water. Careful temperature and duration control allows fat cell destruction while sparing other tissues. Most patients see results 1-3 months post-treatment as the body clears away the damaged fat cells.
