Fat freezing how did they come up with the idea

The idea for fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, originated from the observation of "popsicle panniculitis" - a condition where children developed dimples due to loss of cheek fat after frequently sucking on popsicles. Drs. Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital connected this fat loss to the fact that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold injury than other tissue types.

Manstein and Anderson went on to develop the concept and technology behind cryolipolysis. They discovered that by carefully controlling the temperature and duration of cooling, fat cells could be selectively crystallized and destroyed while sparing surrounding skin, nerves, blood vessels, and muscle. Their initial experiments on pigs in 2007 demonstrated a 1cm reduction in the pig's fat layer, without damage to overlying skin, after a single 10 minute application of cold.

The doctors patented the technology in 2003 and licensed it to a company called Zeltiq. After further research and development, Zeltiq introduced the first commercial cryolipolysis device called CoolSculpting, which gained FDA clearance for fat reduction in 2010.

Since then, cryolipolysis has grown into a leading non-surgical fat reduction treatment worldwide. Over 8 million treatments had been performed as of 2019. While newer generation devices and protocols have been developed, the core principle of selectively cooling fat cells to induce their breakdown remains central to cryolipolysis today.
