Fat freezing when was it invented

Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, was first invented in 2008 by Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. R. Rox Anderson, two esteemed dermatologists associated with Harvard Medical School. The invention marked a significant advancement in the field of non-invasive fat reduction treatments. This method employs controlled cooling to selectively target and destroy fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body over time. Although the technique was relatively new in 2008, it quickly gained popularity due to its ability to offer an alternative to more invasive procedures like liposuction.

The development of cryolipolysis was based on a scientific curiosity about a phenomenon that had been observed in children who ate popsicles. The dermatologists noticed that some children developed dimples in their cheeks after frequently consuming these cold treats. This condition, known as popsicle panniculitis, is a temporary loss of fat in the cheeks, caused by the cold temperatures of the popsicles. This observation led to a crucial question: If cold could reduce fat cells in a localized area in the cheeks, could the same principle be applied to other areas of the body to target fat reduction?

Manstein and Anderson, motivated by this idea, began to explore the biological response of fat cells to cold exposure. They discovered that fat cells, or adipocytes, are more vulnerable to cold temperatures than other types of cells in the body. The cold selectively targets fat without damaging the skin or other surrounding tissues like muscles or nerves. This finding was groundbreaking because it meant that cooling could be used as a method to reduce fat in specific areas without the need for surgical intervention, as was the case with liposuction.

Their work ultimately led to the development of cryolipolysis, a term derived from the Greek words "cryo" (cold), "lipo" (fat), and "lysis" (destruction). The treatment involves applying a device to the surface of the skin, which cools the underlying fat cells to a temperature that triggers their destruction while sparing other tissues. Once the fat cells are frozen, they undergo a natural cell death process called apoptosis, where they break down and are gradually eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system.

The technique was first commercialized by Zeltiq Aesthetics, a company that worked closely with Manstein and Anderson to develop a device for clinical use. This device, known as CoolSculpting, received FDA clearance in 2010 for the non-surgical reduction of fat in areas like the abdomen, thighs, and flanks (love handles). CoolSculpting quickly gained popularity due to its effectiveness and non-invasive nature. Unlike traditional fat reduction procedures like liposuction, CoolSculpting requires no incisions, anesthesia, or recovery time, making it an attractive option for those seeking body contouring with minimal downtime.

Since its inception, fat freezing has become a widely recognized and popular cosmetic procedure. Its appeal lies in its ability to target stubborn fat areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. While not a solution for weight loss, cryolipolysis has become a sought-after option for individuals looking to reduce localized fat deposits and achieve a more contoured body shape. Over the years, the technology has continued to evolve, with new applicators and devices being developed to target different areas of the body, including the arms, back, and even under the chin.

The success of cryolipolysis can be attributed to its basis in sound scientific principles, as well as the growing demand for non-invasive aesthetic procedures. Since its invention in 2008, it has revolutionized the cosmetic industry, offering a safe and effective alternative to traditional fat reduction surgeries.
